Increasingly, colleges are encouraging students to spend time studying at a school outside of the United States. No matter what your field of study, you can benefit from studying abroad.
If you study a foreign language, you will probably want to study in a country where that language is spoken. If you are studying business, economics, history, or government, then an international perspective would be of value to you. Even students who focus on American studies can benefit from learning how other countries view the United States.
Two-year and four-year colleges offer programs for international studies. For example, the American Institute for Foreign Studies coordinates programs with many community colleges so that students can study outside the United States. Students at Santa Rosa Junior College in California, for example, can study in London, England.
Students at Grambling State University in Louisiana are able to study in countries such as Brazil, Mexico, China, India, Malaysia, and Kenya. If you attend Middlebury College in Vermont, you will have the opportunity to study throughout the world in diverse locations such as Montevideo, Uruguay; Irkutsk, Russia; Segovia, Spain; and Hangzhou, China.
Students who want to spend all of their college years outside the United States can apply directly to colleges based in other countries. They can also apply to American colleges based in other countries. Choose wisely if you plan to study outside the United States. Be sure your degree will be valid in the United States.
