distance learning 2 Distance Learning (2)Military Choices

Distance learning has opened up many opportunities for members of the armed forces and their families. People who work for the military may move a lot or are often stationed in distant or remote locations. As a result, they do not always stay long enough at one specific college to complete its graduation requirements. In addition, they may need specific courses, especially in engineering and electronics.

Military bases often have education centers in which one or more colleges offer classes. Some colleges have branches on or near military bases or other government facilities.

For example, the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) has numerous international locations that serve students from all 50 states and on all seven continents. You can take courses through UMUC, even if you are stationed as far away as Antarctica.

The military also has special partnerships with more than 1,800 colleges. Partner colleges are called Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOCs). These partnerships help military personnel and their family members complete college programs.

Correspondence Studies

Correspondence studies are the original form of distance learning. Students receive course materials and return their assignments through the mail. The Internet has made it possible for many of these materials to be sent electronically as well.

However, not everyone who needs or wants to take courses at a distance has a computer or Internet access. Many career and technical schools, as well as many colleges, offer correspondence courses through the mail. For example, Western Kentucky University offers over 40 correspondence courses.
