Students can now learn at a distance. They can take courses from home, from the workplace, and from many other locations—even from the South Pole or an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean!
Distance learning describes instruction that takes place when the student and the teacher are not in the same location. The Internet, television, audiotapes, videotapes, CD-ROMs, and printed materials all are used in distance learning.
Sometimes students are able to interact with the teacher in real time—when a class is actually being taught. In fact, a class might be made up of dozens of students in different locations, even from all over the world. Yet the students are learning at the same time. In other cases, e-mail and the Internet make it possible for students to set their own schedules. They interact with their teachers and other students on an individual basis.
DeAnza College, in Cupertino, California, has a large Distance Learning Center that offers dozens of courses at a time in a wide range of subjects. Sometimes, students can choose different forms of learning, though not every course is offered in more than one way. Students can complete all or most of their educational requirements through this center.
Distance learning is an excellent choice for mature, selfdisciplined students. It’s a learning option that allows some students to take more classes than they could if they had to travel and spend time on campus—for instance, students who have to work, travel, or help care for family members. Distance learning also provides great opportunities to take classes that are not available nearby, to develop career skills, or simply to enjoy the fun of learning.
