Many colleges have student apartments, both on and off campus. Unlike dorm rooms, apartments have their own bathrooms and kitchens. Some colleges maintain apartments to ensure a steady supply of student housing.
College-run apartments usually go first to married students, graduate students, students with children, and upperclassmen. Students may also arrange their own off-campus housing.
If you plan to live on campus, the college will send you special forms to complete. The forms include questions about your personal likes and dislikes and the kind of person with whom you might want to share a room. For example, the form might ask whether you prefer to study with music playing or with no background noise.
The college tries to match you with a roommate who has similar preferences. The college usually takes responsibility for matching freshmen with their roommates. After that, you can continue with the same roommate, find one on your own, or have one chosen at random.
As a freshman, you may be allowed to room with someone you already know. Many colleges want you to room with someone you do not know so that you will get to meet new people.
Many students must learn to make adjustments in getting along with their roommates, even when they’re a lifelong friend. Learning to make these adjustments is an important part of the college experience. The dorm staff, counselors, advisors, and the dean of students are available to help you.
When you live off campus, you usually need to find your own roommate. Many colleges have student referral programs that help students find other students to be roommates. Many cities also have programs that help students find both off-campus housing and roommates.
You have adjustments to make even if you live at home.Your relationship with your family changes. You also need to make sure you stay connected to the campus.
